Living Philsophy, Overcoming the Resistance

filosofit.jpg

With philosophy there comes responsibility to live it.

Wisdom is knowledge in action.

Sometimes the distance in between knowledge and action is long, because we have internal resistance to overcome Seth Godin talks about this resistance in his book Linchpin. I revisited my notes and highlights of the book today as I was overcome with huge resistance to finish my company’s website.

Seth Godin writes that the purpose of beginning is to finish. It’s our job to deliver and it is often our fear of inadequacy that keeps us from delivering.

First version of the website is ready www.amorfati.fi/en

Most meaning we can get is through serving others, and to serve others we must begin and finish.

In writing these is this thing called “the first ugly draft.”

In life we are often afraid to be defined by this first ugly draft. Then the one draft becomes hundred, or a thousand and we have not published anything.

When I follow professional work I am often surprised at how high levels people are holding back.

At the same time I’ve great feeling of inadequacy with my own work, own writing, pretty much anything I d so I can understand: it’s easy to tell others what to do.

Mostly our life is a struggle against ourselves, our beliefs about ourselves what we can or cannot do.

I’ve just started on the path of entrepreneur. I’ve a long and rocky way ahead of me. I know this, because big part of me still would like to take the safe and comfortable path of employment, not failing, not starting and trying to do something different.

Yet I choose to try. I want to grow and keep growing.  I also don’t want to buy into the mass hypnosis of not good enough and to break out from that I need to do anything differently, even if it fails.

Must is a powerful reason for action. I believe, I do what I must when I must.

Until then I’ll try to do something different, because there is also part of me that thinks that asks maybe I am good enough and at least some of my work is as well.

Tiny Action Towards the Greatest Contribution

tenerife-4152688_1920.jpg

Taking action and making yourself to move towards your purpose is more important than the results of your actions.

Bhagavad Gita says this about energy: it must be first changed from passive to action, before it can be transformed into harmonious action.

Any movement is better than standing still.

Having written this, instantly my moral philosopher hat on my head I feel contradicted.

In my mind some action is better left undone in the sense of the total good. Yet action over passivity is right in most cases, we just need to recognize the limit. There is also this phenomenon called illusion of action.

Action is the first answer, not the only answer.

Taking more of the right actions is the key. And to take right action means to stop the wrong actions.

More and more of the right actions.

Daniel Pink had a short interview of Tom Rath in Pinkcast about the Life’s Great Question book. Tom Rath advises there to focus on the greatest contribution instead of passion. Greatest contribution is a clue towards the right action.

At the moment for me getting the book published is the greatest contribution I can make. I feel that writing the book was easy, now I am totally in my uncomfort zone with actual steps towards making the publication happen. Yet I’ve made decision and commitment to small incremental action every day to make it happen. Sometimes it might be more, sometimes less. I am making small progress every day that’s what matters.

In the same time as I am making small progress everyday and I am satisfied with that I am also able to keep what I most value in my life which is the habit of writing. Writing is the habit which I wouldn’t want to give up and after finishing my book I had a little bit over a month where I did not write every day. Then I realized writing is something I must do. I’ll figure out everything else in tiny bits and keep on doing the writing because writing is my creative medium which allows me to contribute the most.

At the same time I realize mere writing is not enough at this point and I need to get these writings published as well in order to continue growing as writer and in order to contribute more to the world.

You can do this as well. Understand your strengths, understand in what direction your greatest contribution is and take action towards that, every day. No compromises. You develop your greatest strengths in the direction what the world values and needs most. Both of these things may change shape during the journey and that is okay. By doing this, you’ll take a step by step. Always keeping on taking the step and you’ll see that the steps you’ve taken will form a path. Eventually a road. Travelling will become so much more easier. You’ll become the path, you’ll become what you’ve been doing, and you’ve become great at it because of the effort.

Joy and energy to your life 😊

Where to start?

Avaruussukkula, Raketti, Lähtö, Laukaisuun, Nasa

Everything starts somewhere. Where would you like to go? What would you like have to have?

Have you considered that your all actions are connected? All that you do either nourishes or starves your efforts to where you are going.

It’s not one or two things, is all the things.

Life is far from perfect. It’s far. Meaning that even if you know what you really need, there are few existing solutions that in a harmonious manner deliver just that.

From scarcity, abundance arises.

Scarcity is not real. It might be experienced with your current understanding as real.

Abundance arrives with understanding, creativity and power.

Creativity is power. Creativity is thinking. Creativity is ability to produce the desired results from perceived scarcity.

Creativity is magic.

Humans have the potential for this creative magic. We are magicians.

Life often and all the time provides what we want, even desire. However, when we what have wanted and desired arrives, we barely even recognize it. This happens because we may not be ready. We are not ready by ourselves, we are not ready in the moment.

Our expectations are that of immediate expectations. If something does not happen right away, we stop believing. Our wishes, become speech and they become actions. Yet it does not happen as quickly as desires and images form in our mind.

Perceived world is a world of physics. There is cause and effect causal relationship. There are physical laws and limitations. In our desires we fail to simulate this physical world with its laws and limitations, we skip that part right away to the end result and then are disappointed because world does not work the way we want it to work.

If we can remember this lesson that the world is abundant place and does actually provide generously to our needs and even to some desires, we can start to focus where our attention truly matters: making ourselves a better person.

Often times our desires are false gods. Even if we make our desires real we fail to see the consequences what are the end result of it. Some desires provide the satisfaction we seek with tremendous cost. Other desires are just pas-time fulfillment leaving even greater hole in our sense of purpose and meaning in life.

Strongest meaning to life comes from what you can contribute and give to the world, what value can you give. You can read more about giving in From Taking to Giving blog.

Learn to give more effectively what people need and you’ll have in plenty what you need.

Remember, peoples needs are individual. So are yours.

To be able to serve properly, you must start with your own life. Get your life together. Become the person who you would like to become, stop wishing for it start working towards it today.

Everything starts with you, everything starts now. Everything starts as you gain consciousness of being.

Start where you are right now, this moment.

Joy and energy 🖖

From Taking to Giving

Mature men and women are givers. Immature people are takers.

Mature people seek to give value, where as immature people are looking what to take and gain.

For men, it is difference between boy and man psychology. For women, between girl and a woman psychology.

In the book series King, Warrior, Magician & Lover, Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette focus more on the mature masculine psychology and how that happens i.e. how a boy dies and becomes a man. Traditionally it has been through rituals in the guidance of elder wise men acquainted with the sufficient knowledge. Writers also point out that most modern societies have transformed many of these rituals into mere impotent ceremonies, which do not have sufficient energy to make the transition.

As example they use a scene described from the movie Emerald Forest where a boy dies during the ritual in the deep jungle and when the sun rises, is born anew as a man.

In the book series also work with the shadow forms are emphasized before starting deeper work. Each archetype has two shadows. So a hero boy could be a bully or a coward, which is then further transformed into a mature warrior archetype which has also it’s shadows the sadist and the masochist.

I’ve found the framework inspiring for my personal development and growth. Through my life I’ve been able to recognize moments where the thoughts, words/lines or actions have actually been categorized as shadow work versus being fully mature. These are exceptionally educative moments.

Sometimes shadow do take us over, and when that happens we have to be ready. Shadows are part of us, and in a healthy mind they become part of the whole. “Not too much, not too little.”

Healthy psychology and healthy giving is like that as well. When we give too much we make people weak. When we take too much, we become weak.

Giving should also be focused on more lasting giving.

When eating a fruit, how often do you thank the person who planted or nurtured the fruit tree? Or picked that fruit up?

Nature contains many blessings even without us. I live in Finland and Finnish forests are abundant of various berries during summertime. Having lived in countryside for my childhood, I’ve learned to respect everything in the nature. Few days ago I realized that I could be doing still much better work in my present life and condition and I should. Let this be my lesson and decision to start contributing more towards the nature from this day onwards.

What are value you going to give and how?

In awe of your creative abilities

Where is the path of greatness.png(Pyramid of Greatness, Janne Piiroinen)

Where is the greatness but in you?

Life as an experience is miracle if we look at the odds.

Then at our present we may not feel that way. Feeling certain way is, because of the evolutionary advantages of conserving strength among other reasons and complexities.

Life is a result of complex process. At least it is complex in comparison what our conscious mind is at times able to handle. At our best even our conscious mind is a miracle. However, hungry, exhausted, stressed and worried? Not quite so.

It takes another almost miracle to create environment where we are at our best. To create that we need other people who understand this.

Of course societies at large are becoming better and better at this, despite of everything. That’s why there is over 7 billion of us today,  more than ever before.

It is illusion that work is over. There is plenty of work for those of us willing to pick up slice of that responsibility which does not belong to them.

To solve problems which have not yet been clearly defined, requires wide range of different skills and above all the one elusive quality that makes us human: creativity.

Creativity is awesome.

What will you create today and how will you share it?

Creativity does not have to wait until tomorrow.

Creativity does not call for perfection.

You might start as a child like level, however do not be embarrassed of that. Think of Picasso, who tried lifetime to reach that state again. That is the cycle, irony and cosmic joke of life. We are afraid to begin, yet once we have got up to a speed we desire to return to that state. And it might take decades of masterful effort to be able to call oneself beginner again.

In order to figure out your strengths and creative tendencies, think of something that interests you. Start doing it with low barrier and commit to it for thousand repetitions. Do not judge yourself until you have thousand repetitions behind you. Then start to ask yourself if this is something you would like to continue in longer term.

Committing to something for thousand repetitions is under three years if you do it daily. It might seem like a lot, or a few, depending on your perspective. How about just be present and do something today?

RICH DON’T WORK FOR MONEY

light-bulb-moment-2615457_640.jpg

Definition of rich is literally and simply that of do you work for the money or does the money work for you. Being rich isn’t defined by the amount of money you have, but by the way that you are using the money what you have. In the way you think about the money is the way you use the money.

Being rich is mindset and behavior of money use.

Rich people do not work for the money, they make money work for them.

To make money work for you, you have to recognize few essential terms. First there is income, which is all the money that is coming in. Then there are expenses, which are all the money that are going out of your pocket.

Next two are a little bit more difficult: assets are all the things you own that bring you income (after expenses). Liabilities are all the things that cost you money time and time again.

Essentially becoming rich is about acquiring assets and getting rid of liabilities. Once you have enough assets you have regular income, which is called cash flow. When you have sufficient amount of cash flow per month, let’s say 2000 € and your liabilities are at zero you are pretty well covered.

In order to get and create assets your greatest asset is your mind. Invest in yourself and your learning.

“Study hard so you can find a good company to buy.” – Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad

I might add work and study hard in order to find or create a good company to buy.

What ever you are doing in your life, do it to learn more. Do not let the money entice you, remember who is the master and who is the servant. Money is your servant and you are the master. Therefore always work to learn.

Always speak kindly of the money as well. Money will come to those who will speak kindly of it. Who would like to work for a bad master?

As you learn all the time quicker and quicker. You’ll learn creative ways to create more money out of nothing. This is where all your learning is aimed at.

At first you’ve little or nothing and you are not asking for any money. You are not asking for any money, because you are not the servant of money. You are the master of money who is learning the ways of the money. The more you learn the ways of the money, the more you’ll make the money work for you. The more you master money, the more opportunities will come to your way.

Remember: be the master of money. To master money, you’ll need to learn, learn and learn. Learn everything about the money and speak kindly of it. Perhaps some money will come to your way and you will be grateful for it. For now you know, it will work for you as long as you’ll remember to take good care of it.

Decisions to Do Create Something from Nothing

beach-2637281_640.jpg

Today as I was packing my stuff for the move. I finally got to my lifeboard, a very deal construction of post-its and such that I try to keep there to remind me of that which is really important and valuable for me in life. Each morning I’ll start my day by spending five minutes with lifeboard.

Now that I was taking lifeboard down carefully, I noticed that there are too many things there again. A decision to do something, should always go with a plan what is worth sacrificing for this decision. The decision become holy when something is sacrificed. Sacrifice is for example the decision not to do something, there is opportunity cost involved and based on conscious decision one choose an action over another.

Decision to do, requires a decision not to do.

When you’ve done something, that you have sacrificed your time and actions for, it really starts to matter. Anymore there is no messing around. Decision making is serious business as time is really limited.

Virtuous person will find oneself in a position where there is not simply possible not to do. This is because virtue is values in action and when one is able to live virtuously, there are few unskillful actions and when there are those actions are quickly corrected. Thus we get to a point where you’ve to choose in what order or with what focus you will commit to your decisions. It’s possible to overlap several things: such as going for a walk, with audiobooks and with grocery shopping. Three things done at a same time.

However, the experience of listening to a audiobook suffers still from opportunity cost of taking notes or checking additional material while at it.

Despite the opportunity cost, I believe a lot in overlapping several activities. Through habits we do not need to have any excuses not to do things. Instead we should find creative ways to get the decisions done no matter what.

Decision and commitment to that decision means using the limited time to come up with the results. Ex nihilo, from nothing everything has been made

Don’t Let the Limits Bother You

moor-278409_640.jpg

Creativity blossoms out of limits.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.” ― Henry Ford

Excuses are form of our own thoughts limiting our own actions. Let go of excuses.

Beliefs what is or is not possible is a form of limitation. Do not let beliefs hold you back, look to open up possibilities.

What we have achieved before, does not mean something is impossible. It has just merely been done before. Do not let past, history limit you.

What others think you can or cannot do, is not necessarily accurate judgement. Do not let others determine what you can or cannot do. You know yourself best and if you think you have a chance, try it out.

Do not let the limits bother you, even if there are limits, seek to build bridges in between. You will find more strength and are able to summon unexpected strength and creativity. Limits are the construction material for greatness.

Poem: The Change Makers

Ignorant we all are, I must admit.

Yet there are those who to this do not submit.

These people are the shapers,

The change makers.

Those who are courageous enough to seek truth.

And stand to face the oppressive Brood,

Who do not care where the truth stood,

Or what was for everyone’s good!

People like Mandela and Gandhi,

Have become such examples, how handy!

Equipped with truth, love, and courage,

Have built their wisdom and virtue while pulling the carriage.

Suffering of the wheel,

Is imaginable and real.

They made no squeal,

Because it was in their interest to heal.

With grace they endured,

To the inner work they spurred.

Through work they developed,

And a new kind of thinking enveloped.

Wrong they faced,

Pain not only grazed.

They got to taste the pain of living,

And transformed it in their minds into a giving.

Yet people were astray.

Not caring what they had to say.

Thus they were sent away.

Only to return; and light the way!

They learned to care first,

To quench another one’s thirst.

People do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care, said Teddy.

World is not so steady,

You better get ready,

Your ignorance is unstable,

To care you are able!

Formula for Creative Output

wal-2722172_640.jpg

“It’s not the hours you put in your work that counts, it’s the work you put in the hours.”  – Sam Ewing

Results do matter. Then there are people who say “quantity first” or “quality first.” They are both right. Especially when it comes to business or creativity (art) quantity does come first and with that comes the quality.

“Picasso’s oeuvre includes more than 1,800 paintings, 1,200 sculptures, 2,800 ceramics, and 12,000 drawings, not to mention prints, rugs, and tapestries— only a fraction of which have garnered acclaim.” – Adam Grant, Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World

Well Picasso is an example here, yet you could pick almost any famous artist. Because those who succeed with little output and some masterpieces are the exception rather than the rule. The conclusion is if we look at the probabilities that the highest originality correlates with the volume of the output.

Both quantity and quality matter. Yet if you want the probabilities to be with you, you do it through the quantity. Probabilities in this life is like the force in the Star Wars. You would like the probabilities to be with you.

At first the quantity is worthy of worship. It’s only when we’ve learned some rudimental basics and notice that we are banging our heads to the walls that we can start to think a bit about in terms of quality. First we must become an object to learn anything. Later on then we can start to switch between applying what we have learned and the learning itself.

We should keep on doing a lot precisely because of learning and renewal. Learning is the core of creativity. And the learning happens through the function of quantity.
